Public Speaking and Anxiety

Full of confidence, had total control over my thoughts. The hall was full of crowd, yet, I was sitting all alone in one of the corners. I was nervous about my performance sometimes I would go out and come back in, I was shivering of nervousness all I wanted to do be go right up on the stage and give my performance.

I was caught up with all these thoughts and suddenly, I heard my name being announced, I stood up, took a deep breath and went ahead. It was a district level debate competition and students from different schools were there, and I was representing my school. I stood up on the stage and when I rolled my eyes to look straight I started feeling very anxious and nervous. I felt as if all the thought I gathered was all gone, I couldn't think of anything that moment. I looked towards my teacher, and she was asking me to start. After a few seconds I tried and starting speaking.

I finished my part and came back to my seat, but I was anxious as to what's going to happen.

This feeling of anxiousness is very common, a lot of people have a fear of public speaking. Rather than sitting with that anxiety we should think of how to get rid of that.

There are things that we have to keep in a mind that can help us get rid of anxiety.

1: Fear of public speaking is a common form of anxiety. But with preparation and persistence, you can overcome your fear.

2 : Believe in yourself- You should have full confidence in what you are saying and the topic you have chosen should

be very clear you and you should have full knowledge about that so that even if someone asks any questions you don't have the fear of getting wrong.

3: *Confidence* — Practice your content a lot of times before you speak. You can practice in front of the mirror or you can practice in front of any person you are comfortable with so that he or she can tell you where you go wrong. Practicing in front of a mirror would also help you with your body language because when you speak even body language is very important.

4: *Don't hesitate to make mistakes*- You should not hesitate to make mistakes and think ok as making mistakes is ok you won't be punished for it. Even if you stop in the middle, and you get confused take a deep breath and start again.

"Mistakes are important for getting success, so do not fear of them".

5: If you feel low, do some deep breathing.

6: Focus on your material, not on your audience.
